Three Mini-Sermons from Jonah 3:1-3

Big Idea: God is always committed to the glory of his name proclaimed in the salvation of his people. God is constantly working to redeem us from our sins so that we might glorify his name to those around us.

  1. Your _______________ story matters

Jonah 3:1 (ESV) — 1 Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying…

Your failures are just as important to your story as your victories are.

Gal. 1:11-24

  1. God is _________ ___________ with you yet

Jonah 3:1–3 (ESV) — 1 Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.” 3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord…

Jonah 1:3 (ESV) —3 So Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord…

Jonah 3:3 (ESV) —3 So Jonah rose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord…

The Lord cannot give up on us!

Numbers 23:19 (ESV) — 19 God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?

Malachi 3:6 (ESV) — 6 “For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.

Romans 11:29 (ESV) — 29 For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.

“God is unchanging in his promises. Ah! we love to speak about the sweet promises of God; but if we could ever suppose that one of them could be changed, we would not talk anything more about them. If I thought that the notes of the bank of England could not be cashed next week, I should decline to take them; and if I thought that God’s promises would never be fulfilled—if I thought that God would see it right to alter some word in his promises—farewell Scriptures! I want immutable things: and I find that I have immutable promises when I turn to the Bible: for, “by two immutable things in which it is impossible for God to lie,” he hath signed, confirmed, and sealed every promise of his. The gospel is not “yea and nay,” it is not promising today, and denying tomorrow; but the gospel is “yea, yea,” to the glory of God.” –Charles Spurgeon

Romans 6:1-14

  1. God’s Grace is _____________________

Jonah 3:3 (ESV) —3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey in breadth.

God desires to see the fame of his name spread and the riches of his love to be enjoyed by many.

Questions to Consider

  • In what ways has God saved you and how might you declare his glory in that salvation?

  • Are you selling the gospel short if you are unwilling to talk about your failures? Why or Why not?

  • Is there a certain sin that God desires you to be free of? How might you go about pursuing redemption with God? With others?

  • What is the immutability of God? Why is it important?

  • Are you comforted by the fact that God cannot give up on you? Why?

  • Why does this not give you a license to sin?

  • In what ways might God be calling you back to himself? What circumstances are you facing right now that God is using to provoke a greater trust in Him? How is he going to use that to push you onto proclaiming his name to others?
