1John 2:2b
Big Idea: Jesus is the only hope for the world. Jesus sacrifice is sufficient to cover any and all sins and He is the only one who can restore us to God the Father.
Matthew 12:18-21
The _________________________ of Jesus’ Propitiation
1 John 2:2 (ESV) —2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
When we think “world”, we think population, we think numbers, we think all-encompassing.
1John 2:15-17, 3:1, 3:13, 4:1-6, 5:4-5, 5:19
John 1:10, 3:19, 4:42, 7:7, 8:12, 12:31, 15:18-19, 18:36
When John says world, he almost always has in mind quality not quantity, kind not population, character not scope.
John 1:29 (ESV) — 29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
Beloved this is so hope-filled! There is not a sinner in this world, who’s sin is so great, that Jesus cannot meet them in their sin.
1 Timothy 1:15–16 (ESV) — 15 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. 16 But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.
Psalm 103:11–12 (ESV) — 11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; 12 as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
The ____________________________ of Jesus’ Propitiation
1 John 2:2 (ESV) —2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
Acts 4:12 (ESV) — 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
1 Timothy 2:5 (ESV) — 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
Beloved hear this and believe it, Jesus is the only hope for those who are born into a kingdom that is opposed to God at every turn. Jesus is the only one who can address our need for propitiation. Jesus is the only one who can restore humanity back to fellowship with God.
Romans 10:12–15 (ESV) — 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
