Big Idea: Jesus possess ultimate authority because he is sovereign creator of all things. When Jesus speaks he speaks reality into existence. Because Jesus can envision and execute that which exists in truth; he therefore can declare things that truly are.
Jesus’ Authority Over _____________________ (realm of truth)
Luke 4:31–32 (ESV) — 31 And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath, 32 and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority.
What we see in our text is that Jesus is a teacher first and foremost, that is to say that Jesus reveals and declares to us things as they truly are.
Authority is having ______________ ability, resources, and power and exercising that _________________ for the ultimate good of others.
Jesus speaks truth because Jesus is the author of what is real.
Colossians 1:15–17 (ESV) — 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
all of Jesus’ miracles ultimately serve this end, to authenticate Jesus’ authority over truth.
Jesus Authority Over __________________________ (spiritual realm)
Luke 4:33–35 (ESV) — 33 And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 “Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” 35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!”
Luke 8:24 (ESV) — 24 And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm.
Jesus has the same power and authority over the truth as he does over the unclean spirits. Jesus possess authority over all that is real, and therefore can declare reality with a word spoken from his mouth.
Ephesians 1:3 (ESV) — 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,
Romans 6:22–23 (ESV) — 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Colossians 2:13–14 (ESV) — 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
Jesus’ Authority Over __________________________ (physical realm)
Luke 4:28–30 (ESV) — 28 When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29 And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. 30 But passing through their midst, he went away.
