Committed to Our Identity in Christ 2Peter 1:3-4

Kingdom Principle: God grants us godliness by granting us the gift of his Son. As we identify with Christ in us, we are able and willing to live as Christ calls us to live.

Three Absolute Truths of the Good News of Jesus Christ:

  1. God _______________________

2 Peter 1:3 (ESV) — 3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness…

2 Peter 1:4 (ESV) — 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises…

The absolute reality of the gospel is that you don’t have to do anything to earn it, it is completely and perfectly given to you.

“Hath given” is dōreō, (δωρεω,) a stronger and more expressive word than didōmi, (διδωμι,) “to give.” It means “to grant or bestow.” Strachan says that “this word and its cognates always carry a certain regal sense describing an act of large-handed generosity.”

In the immeasurable gift of the gospel the Lord Jesus Christ has given us, himself, which is beyond comparison.

  1. God Grants us _______________________

2 Peter 1:3 (ESV) — 3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,

God not only frees us from the penalty of our sin but he works in us the power of his Son.

Godliness is the outward manifestation of the indwelling Savior.

We should live as Jesus lived because it is Jesus who is living in us.

  1. God Grants us Godliness by Giving Us His _______________________

2 Peter 1:4 (ESV) — 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature

Divine nature = the moral quality that makes up the Godhead.

God in the gospel removed the heart of stone and gave us a heart of flesh, receptive to the things of Christ and in agreement with Christ’s kingdom because it is the very heart of Christ.

Galatians 3:27 (ESV) — 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Philippians 2:5 (ESV) — 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,

Colossians 1:27 (ESV) — 27 To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

Not attending Worship or Not meeting together with other Christians is as unnatural for the new man as a football fan wearing their rival’s jersey, it feels gross.

Questions to Consider

  • What is the good news for our sanctification (life as a Christian)?

  • What does this good news look like in our daily life? How do you rely on Christ in the midst of your hardest relationships?

  • In what ways are you still trusting in works to make you godly? How might you repent of those things?
