Committed to Make Disciples in the New Year Matt. 28:16-20

Big Idea: As the church is committed to make disciples, the Lord calls us to “go” in his power and resolve.

What is a disciple? A disciple is a __________________ ____________ and _______________ of what they love.

Matthew 28:18–20 (ESV) — 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Our greatest ambition on this earth and therefore that which we ought to give our time and energy is discipleship, or the process of making disciples, faithful followers and promoters of Jesus.

We share in the resurrection power of Jesus so that we might be the evidence of resurrection within every setting we find ourselves.

Your circumstances are not a mistake. They are not mundane. They are the means that God uses to make more disciples.

We make disciples first by going out into the world, not by simply waiting for the world to come to us. We are not pushy, but we have plans, individually and corporately, to reach the world for Christ. We take the initiative. We have a right and a duty to pray for the lost in our own circles and to look beyond that circle.

Long before your co-workers, friends, and neighbors, attend a Worship Gathering, or make a decision for Christ, you are discipling them into the kingdom by showing them the reality of what Christ has done for you and what he can do for them.

Matthew 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

I am with you all every single day for as long as the end of this life.

2 Corinthians 5:13–15 (ESV) — 13 For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

Questions to Consider

  • What is the first stage of making disciples? What does it look like for you to be intentional about making disciples as you go?
  • How can you create more environments where you are exposing non-believers to the resurrection power of Christ in you?
  • What does it look like to rely on Christ’s strength and ambition in this Great Commission?
