Humble Servants of the Exalted King: Part 1 Luke 5:1-11

Big Idea: Jesus shows his authority over nature as he demonstrates his power over the fish of the sea. This cause Peter to worship Jesus and he is calling us to worship him as well.
Jesus Authority over ______________________
Luke 5:4 (ESV) —4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”

Jesus miraculous ministry was intended to prove that Jesus was the Son of God and therefore his Word possessed the very authority of God.

Acts 2:42–43 (ESV) — 42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.
Acts 4:33 (ESV) — 33 And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.

Miracle: the suspending of nature to show ones sovereignty over nature

In our text, Jesus performs a miracle, and the Holy Spirit wants to be sure we understand that what Jesus does here is more than fortunate, it is divine.

poly plethos = many multitudes

In Peter’s mind, this was more than happenstance, this was a divine miracle. This was evidence that Jesus was no mere man, and it causes Peter to declare Jesus as Lord. It cause Peter to worship Him.

Luke 5:8 (ESV) — 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”

Here we see the realm of men, represented by Peter, confess that Jesus is Lord.

Psalm 145:9–13 (ESV) —
9 The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made.
Jesus is Lord of All!
10 All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord, and all your saints shall bless you!
Jesus is Lord of All!
11 They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom and tell of your power,
Jesus is Lord of All!
12 to make known to the children of man your mighty deeds, and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
Jesus is Lord of All!
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures throughout all generations. The Lord is faithful in all his words and kind in all his works.
Jesus is Lord of All!
