1John 2:20
Big Idea: Those who belong to Jesus have received a Trinitarian anointing. We have been anointed by the Father, through the Son, and with the Holy Spirit. This anointing keeps us in the teaching of the Apostles and Prophets preserved in the written Word of God.
Anointed by the ________________ ____________________
1 John 2:20 (ESV) — 20 But you have been anointed by the Holy One…
In the Old Testament anointing was usually done for the purpose of consecration or the setting aside of an individual or object for a particular sacred purpose.
1 Samuel 16:10–13 (ESV) — 10 And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” 12 And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
This is a Trinitarian anointing. All parties of the Holy One are involved.
John 14:25–26 (ESV) — 25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
When we receive the Spirit, as believers, we are given a supernatural ability to identify truth because the Spirit that resides within us is the Spirit of truth and of Christ.
Anointing _____________________ in You
1 John 2:27 (ESV) —27 But the anointing that you received from him abides in you…
No longer does God anoint those individuals particularly called for a given service. Nor does he send his Spirit only to those specially chosen as prophet, priest, or king. God anoints us all and sends us all.
Acts 2:1–4 (ESV) — 1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Anointing ____________________ You
1 John 2:27 (ESV) — 27 But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.

The Spirit of God, proceeding from the Father and the Son, must bear witness in line with what the Father has ordained and what the Son has accomplished.
John 15:26 (ESV) — 26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.
