Message for Baptismal Service – June 11, 2017
Question: Why should a person be baptized?…
Not in order to be saved.
    – For salvation is by God’s grace (unmerited favor) though faith in the Lord Jesus Christ alone, apart from any works.
    – (Eph. 2:8-9): For by grace (unmerited, undeserved favor) you have been saved (past tense – how) through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is a gift of God; not of works – (be they good works for your neighbor or those in need; or religious works done for God – like baptism or communion) – so that no one may boast.

So why be baptized then? …
    – As a means for a believer (already saved and going to heaven) to show their commitment to Christ.
    – For Jesus said after His resurrection and before His ascension back into heaven: – (Matt. 28:18-20):

“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

And the first step in becoming a disciple – a committed follower of the Lord Jesus Christ – is for a believer to obey Jesus’ command to be baptized.

And then as a disciple of Christ, one needs to continue to obey all that Jesus commanded.
    ————————
Throughout the book of Acts, we see that believers were baptized soon after their conversion in that process of making disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. – Let’s look at a few examples beginning with:

The day of Pentecost (Acts 2) – when 3,000 people were baptized after hearing Peter preach the gospel.
    – Read (Acts 2:22-24, 36, 40-41)
    —————
The Ethiopian eunuch in (Acts 8) was baptized after he had the Scriptures about Jesus and His death for sin explained to him by Phillip. – Read (Acts 8:27b-39)

    – Note (vv. 36-37): The importance of a clear testimony of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation before one is baptized.
    – Note (vv. 38-39): Mode of baptism is immersion – (for baptism literally means, “to dip; to fully immerse”)
